When we first started using sunscreen on our daughter, we used specially formulated "baby" versions. I felt these would be safer and contain less chemicals than regular sunscreen. As I researched and my knowledge grew, I realized that many of them contained the same ingredients. We tried out different sunscreens and tried to find one that we felt was easiest to use for the whole family.
The next summer, we noticed that my daughter was coming home from the beach with a very red face each day, despite applying plenty of sunscreen. It wasn't sunburn-it would quickly fade once she took a bath. It turns out that she was very sensitive to many of the ingredients in these "natural" sunscreens. Mineral sunblocks and products with zinc were fine, while traditional sun'screens' seemed to set off the reaction.
Last year, we found Loving Naturals sunscreen and immediately fell in love. It worked well for the whole family, even my sensitive daughter and surfer husband. He felt that it worked even better than some waterproof and sport sunscreens designed for heavy activity. No rashes, no sunburn, no chemicals! We were in love...except for one downside. The sunscreen went on white and left us all looking a little pale and ghostly. It would mostly sink in, but there was still that "white shadow."
Since we really liked it and wanted to use it regardless, I was so excited when I saw that Loving Naturals reformulated the sunscreen to go on clear. It still offers the same great protection without chemicals, but now easily rubs in clear. They've also expanded the line to include a clear face version and baby versions. The sunscreen sticks also go on clear. It's really the best of both worlds!

Mom Products I Found Through Cloth Diapering
When we started cloth diapering my oldest daughter, I was hooked right away. I loved the decline in trash, the cuteness of her bottom, everything! When I started looking at the sites we were buying from, I saw there were other great reusable products for the whole family. More reading on cloth diapering blogs and diapering forums introduced me to lots of great ideas. Cloth diapers set off a chain reaction that will last long after my younger daughter is out of diapers. Here are some products I found through cloth diapering and love!
Reusable nursing pads: The first time around, I used those disposable pads. They were itchy, uncomfortable and expensive. By the time my younger daughter came, I had a supply of reusable nursing pads. Made of organic cotton, bamboo or microfleece, these pads were far superior, more comfortable and easier to hide under clothing.
Dryer balls: We have about 6 dryer balls in our dryer at any one time. They help to make the laundry softer without chemicals, residue and scents. They are great for cloth diapers and make our towels a lot softer.

Cloth menstrual pads: I am SO glad that cloth diapering led me to learn about cloth menstrual pads! They have made each month a more enjoyable experience, and I have none of the previous irritation I used to suffer. Just like a cute diaper makes changing more fun, pretty cloth pads help during an otherwise 'blah' time.

No Blues With This Denim Diaper
It's no secret that cloth diapers are cuter than disposable diapers. While it's not the main reason why parents choose cloth, it is a nice benefit. Disposable companies may also have taken notice of cloth's cuteness, judging from last year's releases of "designer" and "denim" diapers.Mommy's Touch has taken the cuteness to a whole new level, however. With the new Baby Blues Denim line it's possible to enjoy a denim diaper that's both adorable and resusable.

Snooty Booty Diapers Fall Open House
It's time for my monthly post and it's just a little early to discuss all the great products that many companies are unveiling over the next week or so. We've seen a lot of sneak peeks and print releases, and there's still more to come. By next week, a lot of great products will be available for retailers to order. Bottombumpers was one of the last brands to offer sized-only diapers, so I knew it was only a matter of time until they developed a one-size diaper. I wondered though, if a one size version would stay true to the trim-fitting design of their sized diapers. One of the brand's great features is the trim fit. It's really hard to keep a trim fit in a one-size while providing enough coverage for larger babies on larger settings.
A couple of months ago, retailers were allowed to purchase a one-size sample to try out. I was very excited to receive the one-size diaper...until I opened the package. When I took it out, I was sure that Bottombumpers had sent me a sized diaper by accident. They looked exactly alike! To show how easy it is to confuse them, I lined up 3 diapers here. 2 are sized, and the yellow one is one size. It blends in so well!

Since the diaper accommodates 4 size settings, it's not quite as trim on the smaller settings at the sized Bottombumpers. It is less bulky than many other one size brands, thanks to the smooth, snap-less rise. The absorbency of the soakers is great, and the materials are the same that you are used to in the sized version. To help compare, the green diaper is the one-size on the second setting next to a medium size blue.
The verdict? I really like this diaper and was excited for its release. Since it's looking like we might have outgrown our medium Bottombumpers before my daughter potty-trains, I'm glad that I'll be able to move her easily to the next size setting on the one-size. It's trim enough that clothing fits easily over the diaper, and she does well with the absorbency. If you're really concerned about getting the trimmest fit, then you should still consider the sized diapers. Otherwise, the one-size is a great way to go!

Help RDA's Anniversary Fund Drive
The Real Diaper Association will be turning 6 years old this month! The RDA works hard to promote cloth diaper advocacy and support channels. Just this year, they've launched 3 parts in their 100% Reusable Cloth Diapers campaign: night diapering, using cloth while traveling, and now wash routines. For each part, cloth diapering parents are able to submit their personal tips for success. Tip sheets can help to support many cloth diapering families in the future!
Some, but not enough, moms have a local Real Diaper Circle. These groups help cloth diapering families to connect and share. They also help to spur on more local advocacy and more families moving to cloth!
In order to help further these programs and keep its executive director, the RDA has launched a $3500 in 35 days campaign. This campaign ends on August 11. It started out strong, with a Twitter party to help raise funds and awareness. Snooty Booty Diapers was proud to donate a portion of its sales from July 16-23 to help the fund drive. With just a few days to go, there's still money to be raised. You can help by becoming a member of RDA. If you're already a member, make a donation. Any amount helps. Membership and donations are tax-deductible, so don't delay!

Heading up to NYC for the TODAY Show...and a giveaway!

Many of you may have seen the TODAY show segment about the new "designer" diapers from Pampers. Check out Amanda's post below for more information!
In an attempt to make disposables more appealing, Pampers is teaming up with designer Cynthia Rowley to feature limited edition prints. My feeling is that if you want a diaper to be cute AND functional AND save money, then go with cloth! My hope is that many parents, in wanting their babies' bottoms to be cute and comfortable, will actually take a closer look at cloth.
Jenn from Cottonbabies is thinking along those lines as well. She's organized cloth diapering families to stand outside the TODAY show tomorrow, July 8th to promote cloth. Parents will be outside, showing off their babies in cloth diapers. The hope is that it will help to bring awareness about cloth diapers even without a scheduled segment in the show.
I'm excited about venturing there this morning to help promote cloth diapers. I'll update after my trip with more details!

It was a good time! My daughter was extremely well-behaved, considering she woke up much earlier than usual and is not used to the hustle and bustle of the city. We met Jenn from Cottonbabies and her daughter. Everyone was very nice and it was great seeing other babies in cloth diapers. Since I didn't get there at 6, it was hard to tell how many moms and babies showed up. Everyone was scattered through the crowd so that the signs and babies could be more visible. I'm positive that one mom spoke about cloth diapers on camera, but I haven't seen the tape to know how visible the diapers were.

Fleece Liners: An Accessory that Multitasks
A customer recently sent me an e-mail interested in fleece liners, but wanted to know "exactly what they are for." She was trying to compile a list of diapering necessities. I recommending fleece liners quite often, but was still surprised when I compiled the list of all the reasons people use them.
~A stay dry liner
Prefolds are inexpensive, easy to clean, absorbent and durable. The downside? They hold wetness against the skin, which can irritate some babies. Fleece liners help to create a stay-dry barrier between baby's bottom and the prefold.
~Easy clean-up
For babies with sticky or messy bowel movements, fleece liners make clean-up easier. Whether dunking in the toilet or rinsing with a diaper sprayer, dealing with a small liner can be easier than grappling with a larger diaper.
~Diaper cream barrier
Some parents prefer to use diaper creams or need to apply medications that are not completely safe for cloth diapers. A fleece liner helps protect the diaper while allowing parents to apply cream to bottoms.
~Stain free diapers
For parents that prefer to keep the insides of their diapers pristine, a liner helps to prevent most solids from reaching the inner pocket.
~An inexpensive test
I recently had a customer whose baby had sensitive skin. She wanted to use pocket diapers, but was worried that the fleece inners may irritate her child. Instead of investing in some diapers, she bought a few fleece liners and laid them in her disposable diapers. Once she knew that the fleece wouldn't irritate the baby's skin, she was able to purchase a set of pocket diapers without worry!
So, are fleece liners a necessity? Not 'necessarily'. Many cloth diapering families get by fine without them. They are certainly useful, however. Since they are also inexpensive, it can be a good idea to have a couple around in case you need them.

My name is Michelle and I'm the owner/operator of Snooty Booty Diapers. I live at the Jersey Shore with my husband and 2 daughters. We started cloth diapering when my 3 1/2 year old (now out of diapers) was 5 months old and are currently diapering our 18 month old. Between the 2, I've experienced every stage of cloth diapering-newborn, night diapering, starting solids, wrestling a crawler and potty training.
