Welcome to Everything you ever wanted to know about Hemp!

Why do an entire post on Hemp? Because Hemp is fast becoming one of the most popular components in diaper making and it happens to be sustainable too. The problem is that it's controversial and there are many misconceptions regarding this amazing resource. Hopefully this post will shine some light on the truth about Hemp and help us all understand it's place in our lives.

Let's first address some of those laughable yet serious questions that most people may have about Hemp.

If it's Hemp can I smoke it? This seems like a silly question, people really aren't going to try and roll up their hemp t-shirt or diaper and smoke it, but in theory they wonder "Are hemp and marijuana the same thing? The truth is that hemp plants and marijuana plants are NOT the same.

Both the marijuana plant and hemp plant are of the same species but must be grown to produce entirely different plants to yield the desired results. Marijuana plants are desired for their leaves and/or buds and are therefore grown to be "bushy." Hemp plants grown for their fiber and edible seeds are cultivated to be stalky plants with very few leaves. Finally, marijuana results in a crop with high levels of THC while hemp plants contain only trace amounts.

What makes Hemp perfect for cloth diapers and clothing? Well as far back as Christopher Columbus people have been using hemp because of it's superior strength and durability compared to other fibers. It is one the fastest growing renewable energy sources and requires little to no pesticides and no herbicides, unlike cotton, which makes it a super eco-alternative. It also produces more protein, oil, and fiber than any other plant on earth.

Hemp is also superior in it's absorbency compared to other fibers. When compared to cotton it was able to absorb at least 50% more liquid and required much less mass which makes it a super absorbent AND trim alternative.

Hemp is also naturally anti-microbial! This provides a natural protection against mold, mildew, undesired bacteria and other fungus. This is a huge perk and a valuable trait, especially for cloth diapers and inserts.

So let's re-cap!

Origins of 'The Diaper Diva Fold' & Photo Tutorial

I thought it might be cute to see how many of you have heard of 'The Diaper Diva Fold' and to fill you in on the details of how it got it's name and where.

I started my cloth diapering journey, or shall I say addiction, in about March of 2007. Almost immediately I started my business, began building my website and could be found daily online perusing the cloth diaper forums. In August of 2007 I started my Blog DiaperDiscussions and wanted to turn it into a resource for cloth diapering, basically a Cloth Diapering FAQ for my customers.

That same month I was on DiaperSwappers and came across a post by a mama named Shana, her username was Diaper Diva, and she was posting awesome photos of a prefold technique that she used. She was referring to the technique as the "no-fold fold."

I was so impressed by her awesome step by step photos that I decided I would take the plunge and ask her permission to use them on my site and blog. She agreed and I turned her photos into a tutorial. I named it the fold 'The Diaper Diva Fold!'

I remember jokingly telling her "you're going to be famous just you wait and see!" Now I can't help but giggle when I see mamas around the web asking about The Diva Fold and linking each other to my blog. It will always bring back memories for me and remind me of when I was a new business owner trying to add unique resources to my site.

Recommendations for cloth diapering newborns


Steering my customers in the right direction when they ask for advice is always a top priority, and sometimes this means steering them away from a huge sale and into a more realistic, economical and practical option.

New moms, specifically first time moms, are usually really good about doing their research. Which diapers are the best? How do they work? How many do I need? and so on. In my experience they usually end up deciding on a well known pocket diaper, make up their mind that's what they want to use and they plan to build their stash accordingly. New baby = 12-24 pocket diapers plus inserts. Then they're off to shop.

If I knew then what I know now about babies and their bowel movements...lol I would have started with prefolds and covers when I first began cloth diapering my sons, especially since I rarely left the house. Why would I say such a thing? Because new babies poop and pee all day long. A squirt here, a drop there, as soon as you've placed a fresh diaper on their tiny bum they've gone and soiled it again. You check it and think, "man I can't just let them wear that diaper, even if it is only a pea sized amount of poo." Before you know it you've changed that babes diaper 3-4 times in one hour!

This is where prefolds come in. A soft and fluffy prefold, which are easily laundered and very forgiving, can be tri-folded into a cover, think Thirsites, and you're ready to go. Baby soils it two seconds later, you grab a fresh prefold and replace the soiled one with a clean one. Chances are your cover didn't even get dirty. Repeat this scenario throughout the day and you might go through a dozen prefolds and 2-3 covers. Depending on how often you plan on doing laundry, you could get started cloth diapering an infant with 4-6 covers and 2 dozen prefolds.

When you're ready to take baby out and about or have a need for diapers that you can or need to leave on for an extended period of time (like overnight), then you should experiment with pocket diapers and microfiber inserts or hemp inserts. Microfiber and Hemp are miraculous in the amount of pee they can hold, and paired with pocket diapers such as BumGenius or Duo Diapers they've been known to rival disposables in terms of how much they can hold before leaking. This makes them a perfect option for night time diapering or for use when heading to the doctor, the mall, or the grocery store.

Final thoughts, extend the life of your expensive pocket diapers by utilizing prefolds and covers when you can, especially when babies are less than 6 months old.

Julia of Earth Angels Diaper Company

Hello! My name is Julie. I am a 32 year old mama to 3 kids. I have a 7yr old daughter named Guinnevere and identical twin sons, Mason & Spencer, who are 3.5yrs old. My husband Matthew is a local Firefighter/Paramedic and we live on Florida's Space Coast, aka Brevard County, approximately 1 hour east of Orlando.

I began cloth diapering in March of 2006 when my twin sons stash of disposable diapers began to run out. We had been gifted a ton before their birth in October and by March they were almost gone. My husband and I quickly realized the cost was going to be outrageous and we were already very aware of the amount of diapers we were contributing to the landfill each week.

We decided to give cloth diapers a try and it was literally like a light bulb went on in my head as soon as I started shopping around. I knew almost instantly that I wanted to sell diapers and be a work-at-home mom.

Things happened very quickly after that and before I knew it Earth Angels Diaper Co. was up and running online. I've now been selling cloth diapers for just over 3 years and I still love it just as much as when I first started.
