WAHM Shout Out - Snicklefritz

Hi! This is LeAnn from Giggle Britches. I am so excited to announce that our baby girl, Kendall Nicole, was born November 11th. We are adjusting quite well and her big sisters are totally in love. It has been a lot of fun trying out some newborn diapers that I have not used before.

Before I was even pregnant, I had bought 6 newborn Snicklefritz Snappiable fitteds from Nicole on Diaperswappers. I got her "Simple Snickle" back when she was having a sale. They have become one of my favorite newborn diapers! They workmanship is fantastic. The material has stayed so soft even after multiple washings. The fit is perfect on my skinny-legged newborn. I highly recommend these to anyone looking for a simple, newborn fitted diaper. Plus, it is so great to support another work-at-home mom!

Kendall is only 3 days old here :)

The 411 on fleece covers and a giveaway (closed)

Congratulations Jen & Andy!
You are the winner!

Hi! LeAnn from Giggle Britches here again. With the fall season and cooler weather on the horizon, fleece sleepers and pants are hitting the racks in all your favorite department stores. Cloth diapering moms know fleece is a big time material in the cloth diapering world. Many wonder if these items can be used as covers. As long as they are 100% polyester, they can! So what makes fleece so great? Read on!

What is fleece?
Polar fleece (usually just referred to as fleece) is a synthetic material meant to mimic wool. Made from 100% polyester, fleece is designed to allow moisture to transfer through the fabric, or wick moisture through the fabric. When used as a cover, the moisture is pulled away from the diaper to the outer surface of the cover. It spreads out and evaporates into the air.

Benefits of using fleece as a cover:
  • Highly Breathable
  • Lightweight
  • Easy to care for and clean
  • Fast drying
  • Very soft and comfy
  • Great for heavy wetters and nighttime diapering
  • Less expensive than wool
Cons of using fleece as a cover:
  • Bulky
  • Synthetic material, unlike wool
  • More likely to retain urine smell than wool or PUL covers
  • Compression leaking
Don't forget - any cover is only as good as the diaper underneath it! Fleece diaper covers can be used with any prefold or fitted diaper. A good fleece cover paired with an absorbent fitted diaper make the perfect nighttime combination. I really like using the Tiny Tush Hemp fitted or the Happy Hempy pocket fitted with mine.

With winter soon approaching, I have pulled out our stock of the Stacinator fleece covers in this adorable snowman print. I am giving you the chance to win one in a size newborn (6-10 lbs, 13" waist, 6-8" thighs, runs a little big). Don't have a tiny baby - this make a great gift too! Giveaway ends 10-4-10.
WIN IT!!

Mandatory Entry
(1 entry) Comment on whether you have used fleece as a diaper cover, and if so, what you have used (i.e. Stacinator, Old Navy Fleece Pants, etc.)

Prefold meets Fitted and a Giveaway (closed)

Congratulations Lindsey Galvez!
You are the winner!

Hi! This is LeAnn from Giggle Britches again. My very first cloth diaper was a prefold that I trifolded inside a cover. My daughter was about 18 months old at the time. My only disappointment was that my covers would get dirty so easily. Wouldn't it be nice if those prefolds were shaped similar to a fitted diaper?

One of the best features that a prefold has to offer is the soft, absorbent, 100% cotton they are made from. They are easy to launder and very durable too. Without the worry of detergent build-up on synthetic material, almost any detergent works. So, to blend the advantages of the cotton prefold with the convenience of a fitted diaper seems only natural!

There are many different makers of prefold fitted diapers. Adding some elastic, trimming the length of the prefold, and extending the tabs, turns the prefold into a more convenient, yet still very economical alternative. Most are made without any type of fastener like snaps or velcro. The user decides to Snappi, pin, or just lay inside a snug fitting diaper cover.

Recently, Giggle Brtiches partnered with a wonderful WAHM seamstress in the design and manufacture of our own prefold fitteds. They have been tested by some great moms, a few of which are members of this Cloth Diaper Retailer Cooperative! Made from unbleached indian cotton prefolds, they are super soft and absorbent.

Would you like to win one? Here's how! Hurry, giveaway ends 9/3/10 at 11:59 CST.

Top Picks for Newborn Diapers & Giveaway (Closed)

Congratulations to Madeline Miller!
You are the winner of the lil Joey 2-pack giveaway!!

Hi! This is LeAnn from Giggle Britches. I am anxiously expecting the birth of my third daughter due in November! I can't wait to use my newborn "fluff" again! If you want to cloth diaper your baby right from the very beginning, it is a good idea to invest in a newborn stash. Many of the popular "one-size" options out there don't fit newborns well. What do I suggest? Here are my top picks for your itty bitty babe:

1) Prefolds with Thirsties Duo Wraps, Size One (6-18lbs) - Newborn babies and young infants use up to 12 diapers a day! There is no more economical way to cloth diaper your tiny baby than using prefold diapers. You can fold them down to the exact size needed, and prefolds are very absorbent. The Thirsties Duo makes the perfect compliment to the prefold. The leg gussets keep in any messes that may escape the prefold. It is even smaller than many x-small covers out there, with the advantage of growing with your baby!

2) Kissaluvs 0's (5-15lbs) - The thick terry pile of the KL0's make it a perfect diaper for stopping those newborn poops in their tracks! The size o snaps down in the front to help keep the diaper away from baby's healing cord stump. They are more pricey than prefolds, but do a better job of keeping messes in the diaper and off the cover.

3) Lil Joey (4-12lbs) - This diaper is a special all-in-one designed with the intent to fit babies before a one-size option will work. The Lil Joey also snaps down in the front to protect baby's healing cord stump. This diaper has leg gussets which contain messes really well. It is also a great choice for parents looking for a one step diaper change. It will even fit your preemie!

Are you building your newborn stash? Giggle Britches can help! I am giving away one Lil Joey 2-pack in a gender neutral color!! Read on to learn how to enter. Hurry, giveaway ends 8/10/10!

Why are my cloth diapers leaking?

Hi! This is LeAnn from Giggle Britches. One reason I looked to cloth diapers was due to the number of blow-outs my oldest had in her disposables. I am a firm believer that cloth diapers leak less than disposable diapers. However, every once in awhile, you may find your cloth diapers are leaking. I have attempted to compile a list of common types/causes of cloth diaper leaks. So here it goes...

"Wick"ing - When something dry touches something wet, the moisture wicks from the wet to the dry. In the cloth diaper world, we call this wicking. One common cause for wicking is not having all of the prefold or fitted diaper tucked inside the diaper cover. Another cause is when the stay dry lining of a pocket or all-in-one diaper rolls out. A diaper's tag sticking out of the diaper can have the same effect. Make sure to have all parts of the diaper covered by the PUL to help prevent wicking. Also make sure baby's clothing does not get tucked inside the diaper. For example, t-shirts getting tucked inside the top or little girls' bloomers getting tucked inside the legs can both cause wicking.

Compression - When something wet is compressed, moisture leaks out. Compression leaks are often caused by a heavily saturated diaper being squeezed by a car seat buckle, baby carrier, or even a hug. Changing more often easily remedies the problem. I have also seen tight fitting onesies and blue jeans cause compression leaking.

Repelling - When moisture is unable to be absorbed into the diaper due to some type of build-up on the diaper itself, the diaper is repelling. I usually tell people to think of waxing a car. The wax on the car repels moisture the same as any build-up on the diapers. The best way to tell if your diaper is repelling is how wet it is once it leaks. For example, if the insert inside of the pocket diaper is barely wet and the diaper leaks, you have repelling. To prevent repelling, stay away from diaper creams, fabric softeners and certain detergents. See a previous blog post about diaper stripping to remedy repelling.

Fit - The fit of the diaper greatly effects its performance. Many parents are tempted to buy diapers a little big for growing room. However, if there is gaping at the legs or waist, leaks will occur. The same goes for diapers that are too small. Once the rise becomes too short, poo leaks will become more prevalent. Also, smaller diapers have less absorbency (less surface area!) than the next size up.

Absorbency - A diaper can only hold so much! Like I mentioned above, if baby is soaking through the smalls quickly, it may be time to size up to mediums. However, some baby's just need more absorption power! A general rule of thumb: natural fibers, like hemp and cotton, hold more with less bulk than synthetic fibers like microfiber. By adding a natural fiber insert or doubler to your diaper, you can easily add more absorbency with little bulk. Please remember that cloth diapers do need to be changed about every 2 hours.

The Kitchen Family's 1st Cloth Diaper

The very first cloth diaper I used was a standard, 4x6x4, unbleached prefold. I folded it in thirds and laid it inside a medium Thirsties diaper cover. My daughter was a petite 18 month old at about 20 lbs. We chose these diapers for a few different reasons:

1) Prefolds are inexpensive.
2) Thirsties Covers are the #1 rated cover on diaperpin.com
3) The standard prefolds would be less bulky on my petite toddler than premium prefolds.
4) She was not a heavy wetter.
5) The medium cover was roomy enough to last her until potty training.

It also had to be easy for my doubting husband. I accomplished this by having the prefolds folded in thirds ready to go in the covers for him. The system worked well for us and we still use the same prefolds and covers on my second child!

LeAnn of Giggle Britches

Hi! My name is LeAnn, and I am the owner of Giggle Britches, an online cloth diapering store. I run Giggle Britches from my home located in the St. Louis Metro-East area. My husband and I have been married for almost 6 years now and have two beautiful daughters. We are expecting our third child in November 2010.

I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering, and find that I am always looking for more efficient and cost effective approaches to life's everyday situations. Therefore, shortly after we found out we were expecting our second child, I began researching cloth diapers. My oldest constantly "blew-out" of disposables as a young infant, had horrible diaper rashes, and the amount of money I had spent on diapers that were thrown away made me cringe. Cloth diapers seemed like the logical solution. I started with prefolds, covers, and a few pockets and have never looked back. I even converted a couple friends into cloth diaper users!

My little family has moved a couple times in the past few years. Each time, we were fortunate to live in a town with a local cloth diaper shop. Our last move landed us in Troy, IL and it didn't take long for me to realize a need for a cloth diapering and natural parenting store in the St. Louis Metro-East area. I started Giggle Britches this past summer in the hopes to bring products, education, and support for parents in the Metro-East area seeking a more natural way of parenting. The main focus is selling a variety of cloth diapers and to provide customers with the opportunity to see, touch, and compare cloth diapers in person before they purchase. I host bi-monthly workshops and provide one-on-one consultations to further this goal.

My shop carries bumGenius, FuzziBunz, Happy Heinys, Bottombumpers, SoftBums, GroVia, Thirsties, Tiny Tush, and more!
