Adventures Vacationing with Cloth & a Giveaway!

I just arrived home after a 2 week trip (for a wedding and taking my volleyball team to AAU Nationals), the entire time we used cloth diapers! It was quite an adventure!

Before the trip, I did lots of planning. One of our biggest decisions was do we bring our cloth or not. We have traveled before but never this long, and when we had been gone we had stayed with family so we had access to their washer and dryer.

Since my son just started to do some potty training prior to going on the trip and my daughter was pretty much potty trained except for nighttime this did make it a bit easier. Plus we found out that the condo we were staying at had a washer and dryer!

I had to remember though to bring the following:
1. Our diaper detergent
2. Vinegar in a travel spray bottle (I use this to wipe out the inside of the washer and dryer to remove any buildup).
3. Both our potty chairs (we have cheap IKEA ones that fit into one another, thank goodness).
4. Wipes in a container for the road.
5. Diapers of course. (For this trip I decided to bring the following 24 prefolds, 6 OS Pocket, 12 hybrid inserts, extra covers and snappis). I put them in 2 clear plastic bins so I could see what I had.
6. 3 wet bags (1 was a wet/dry bag: we used the dry part for dirty clothes, 1 back up and 1 small one for outings).
7. Anything else I figured I could get on the way if needed. I also made sure I knew which retailers were in the area in case.

So let the adventure begin.
Day 1: Travel to Des Moines, Iowa. My daughter thought it would be fun to stop like every 30 minutes to pee or poop after the midway part of our journey. In all fairness, she really had to go! Overall we arrived in Des Moines with no problems.

Day 3: I washed at the hotel, because we were going to be on the road for up to 3 days starting tomorrow. I was really fortunate as this hotel is run by my Uncle so I was able to check out the facilities during our last trip there. I was however pleasantly surprised to discover that the water was extremely hot, much hotter than we keep so I figured I was good.

I loved the fact that we were there for a wedding and the wedding was in the hotel we were staying at. So we were able to leave the potty chairs and diapers in the room and just run the kids up. Though my kids that it was fun to need to use the bathroom during all the good times of the wedding reception. Food game and my daughter needed to go to the bathroom, I literally got back with her and my son decided to poop, so back upstairs with him. I think they thought it was funny to watch mom run back and forth, lord knows I need the exercise too!

Day 4: We left Des Moines and start our journey down to Orlando, FL. Mind you I never would have made this trip had my volleyball team not been going to play at AAU Nationals. I definitely learned to expect the unexpected this day. We had to wait in a Taco Bell during a tornado warning, the expressway was closed down in St. Louis, then my daughter told us she had to pee and we told her we would get off at the next exit. Well wouldn't you know the expressway was closed down again near West Frankfort, IL (home of Mom's Milk Boutique). Poor thing held it for 45 minutes until we were able to stop and let her go.

Days 6-13: We stayed at a condo in Florida, it was amazing and I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to use cloth while on their vacation. We had a full washer and dryer in our condo. It was great and I didn't have to worry about going out and washing the diapers.

We got some funny looks when they checked our bags at Disney World since we had a potty chair in there. But this was a really relaxing part of our trip while cloth diapering.

Day 15: Our last day, was by far the worst day of cloth diapering. We generally change diapers in the car instead of taking the kids inside. At our last stop before arriving home, I dumped my daughter's potty chair over in the front seat and my son decided to have his worst poop of the trip on the windiest day of the trip. It took us almost 20 minutes and lots of clean up and hand washing at that stop!

So here are things I learned from traveling with cloth:
1. If your child says she has to poop and she is potty training find a place to park next to a garbage can or a wooded area so you can get rid of the evidence.
2. If you are wanting to take cloth with, condos in resort areas are a great option because many have washer and dryers in them.
3. Plan for a days more diapers than you think you will need to be safe.
4. Relax while traveling. We were gone for 2 weeks and 1 day. I planned my diaper washing around naptimes. It worked great and I didn't get stressed because of it.
5. If you don't want to travel entirely with cloth look for one of the disposable insert options.

I forgot to add our giveaway! Win a free bag of Rockin' Green Detergent, Crunchy Clean Detergent or Lulu's in the Fluff!

  3. I remembered that growing up in Vietnam, we were all cloth-diapered. When we would take trips to the beach, our mom (who has 7 kids!) would tell us to take the younger siblings to go poo & pee in the ocean to save on diapers. It was a good chance for us to just run around naked, I think. A vague memory...but fun times :)

Recently traveled to AZ w/ disposables (I'm new to cloth) and didn't have any swim diapers...used a regular disposable in grandma's kiddie pool. Fortunately it's HER pool. Have you seen what happens to a disposable when it's soaked in water. CRAZY.

  5. I recently traveled from CA to MD to see my little brother graduate from the Naval Academy. We were gone for 5 days and used cloth the entire time. We stayed in an Extended Stay and had access to a washer and dryer there. I was glad to have my PW hanging wet/dry bag for easy keeping and transporting of the cloth dipes. I brought my hybrids and pockets but I think next time I might bring prefolds and covers and save a little money just by washing them by hand in the tub.

  6. The few trips we've made have been short and uneventful except for major crying at the public restroom changing stations (from the baby, not me :p).

  7. I have never traveled with cloth for more than a day, so it has never been a problem. However, if we do go away this summer we will be staying in a condo with a washer and dryer.

  8. I love how people who aren't used to cloth diapers look at me like I am nuts, changing my kid in the mall restroom, wet bag and all lol! But a lot of people are also inquisitive so I like to think I'm spreading the word about cloth!

  16. My favorite traveling story was when we went on a four hour round trip car ride without the diaper bag. We had NOTHING. After an hour we realized we left the diaper bag and the rest of the way we just kept telling our baby "Don't poop!"

  20. We just traveled for a week with cloth diapers also. I love to use Grobaby with the biosoakers for traveling. (Although I still bring some pockets too if I know I'll have a washer available). I love getting to show off my cloth diapers to my extended family members. So that's one fun thing. A story I find interesting is back from Christmas. DH said I should travel with sposies. Ok, sure. Well, first stop along the way, first poo in Pampers, and it was out of the diaper and down the leg and up the back. Hasn't happened again using cloth! Proved my point that cloth is better is many ways. :)

  25. I'm so glad I came across this! We are getting ready to go on a week long vacation, our first with cloth. We've done fun day trips with cloth, like Seaworld where my son got to play in the fountains in his Flip because I didn't bring a swimsuit. Disposable diapers are not allowed in the fountains, so his flip with no insert was wonderful, and I just hung it on the stroller to dry in time for the next change. Great tip with the vinegar to wipe the washer out, thanks!

  31. I just took a quick 4 day trip to CA from NC and CD'd the whole time!!! I only brought 2 disposables and was able to come home with both. Luckily I was staying at my parents but I had to remember to bring my detergent and ALL my diapers because I only have about 12 for my 13 month old. It was great, except for the fact that my brothers kept using the old yucky detergent so I had to keep cleaning out the washer. I think i cleaned it out 4 times!! Once for each day! :)

  32. I just got back from a week long trip with my extended family at the beach. I decided to share my cloth stash during our stay with two sister-in-laws who use plastic (just for kicks). All three of us have babies less than a year old. I figured a few more dirty dipes in the washer wouldn't hurt a thing... I had planned on washing cloth at my condo anyway.

We had the BEST time coordinating our babies bums. Our three little chaps were the cutest babies for miles, and when it was all said and done... My sister-in-laws decided to convert to cloth! Who knew diapers could be so fun?

Lessoned learned: Spread a little love and share your stash while on vacation!

  34. The longest amount of time we have traveled with cloth diapers was for about 2.5 weeks. We went from Nebraska to Chattanooga TN stayed there a few days, then on to Charleston SC and was there a week. Back to Chattanooga fore a few more days and then back to Nebraska. It was so easy, there were washer/dryers at each stop, but I still would've done it without them.

  48. Leave a comment to this post with your favorite traveling story with cloth or disposables:

When we were traveling with my son... before we discovered the love of cloth. We smelled this terrible smell and knew that it was him. We were thinking since we had been traveling that it was just one of those constipated traveling poops so we pulled off and pulled over on the shoulder of of the exit ramp because there was nothing near where we were except new FM roads. Oh were we wrong was. It was not the harder constipated poop that smells bad it was normal to slightly wetter poop that was terrible. It was a blow out! Down the legs, up the belly, up the back, covering clothes, and seeminly sticky stinky goo that seemed to increase in potency and amount as we tried to clean him up in the back seat on the side of a highway on a clear day with cars whizzing past at speeds that I Am sure were over regulation causing the car to rock slightly with the force of the passing cars. By the time we were finished we felt like the alien climbing poop was all over us and the car smelled like a sewer. Bounsing baby boy smelled wonderful and was dressed in new clothes and a new dipe ready to go. Mom and Dad were agitated, irritated, grumpy, and felt like they needed to change.

  58. we went away with 3 of our 5 children a few weeks ago for 4 days and I really wanted to continue with our cloth routine, however we didn't have easy access to a washer and besides before we decided to CD I'd stocked up on sposies, so DH vetoed my decision so that we could use up some of those sposies, and not have 4 days worth of stink in our van for the trip...which was understandable. Well ou 5½ month old hadn't pooped in two days and we were walking downtown with my sister and her two children and what does my baby decide to do??? YES!! You're picturing it right now, aren't you?? Well there was no where to change him so I moved the stroller into the doorway of a closed up shop to have a bit of privacy, and since we were borrowing my sisters stroller I thought I'd shimmy the new diaper underneath so that there was no chance of any "spillage"....ummm my hand shot out from under him faster than he could smile at me for doing such a foolish thing!!! so here we are with two lonely cloth wipes (we don't ever use disposable wipes b/c they give our little one a rash immediately) and I've got poop all over the back of my hand and all up the back of his onesie.....so we had to find somewhere to clean up...we go into a little hamburger stand restaurant with a lineup 4 people long....no one wants to let us go first....I'm trying to NOT get baby poop on people as they squeeze past me coming out of the bathroom...finally we get into the bathroom and the lighting is that that in a nightclub...extremely dim....and of course no change table and not even a counter to lay him on...so my lovely dh is standing ther holding baby over the sink as I wet papertowel and try to get all the poop off of his back out of his armpits and even out of between his toes...eeeewww!!! of course it was the regular bathroom paper towels the brown stuff that just slides along your skin when wet...so really we just spread the poop around....and I looked at DH and said....if we'd have brought our CD's we wouldn't be having this problem....and he agreed!!

  73. My favorite time travelling with DD was flying to Texas from New York to visit her grandparents for Christmas. It was before we started using cloth full time, so she was in sposies. DD was only 10 days old, and this little 3 yr. old boy at the airport became really excited at the sight of her. He started dancing around and singing, "She's got little hands, and she's got little feet." DH and I loved the song and added our own lines to it.

I was going to bring cloth diapers, but my mom said this was my vacation so I shouldn't have to wash diapers, so I used disposables. 133. We have only traveled with our cloth diapers once and it was for a long weekend. I was hesitant to ask my husband's family if we could wash our diapers in their machine, but I sucked it up and I did it. And they were so supportive! They were really interested in our diapers and they showed all of their neighbors how they work! I had to use a wet pail rather than my usual washing machine soak method, but it worked out great and I am so glad we did it!
