Stripping? What's that mean?

I couldn't possibly count the number of times I get this question from cloth diapering families. I remember my first experience with hear this word associated with cloth diapers when my first set of cloth diapers were leaking. I remember standing in the kitchen calling the previous owner of Wee Willie Winks and saying I think my diapers are defective. I had just started using them and they were leaking. Kristy assured me they were not defective, but I need to strip them. I have had the same conversation with many families.

How does build-up happen? First of all it comes from using too much detergent. When you think about washing dirty, stinky diapers you would naturally think to use more detergent, but with cloth diapers using less detergent is more. Using half of the recommended detergent from the label is standard. Secondly, build up can just happen from having hard water. Hard water has more minerals in it than soft water. The minerals trap dirt in the fibers. Lastly, maybe your wash routine is not effective. A wash routine should consist of a cold rinse cycle, a long hot wash cycle, and a cold rinse cycle. That's three complete washing cycles.

What's an effective way to strip diapers? There are many ways to strip diapers. One of the first ways is to add extra rinse cycles at the end of your wash routine. If you are still seeing bubbles in the washer after rinsing the diapers on the last cycle then you need to rinse again. Bubbles indicates detergent still in the material of the diapers. If the material is full of detergent residue then they will leak. If rinsing is not working for you then you may want to first check and see what the manufacturer suggest you do to strip them especially if your diapers are still under warranty. Check on the manufacturer's name below for their recommendations:

bumGenius

Thirsties

Happy Heinys

Bummis

FuzziBunz

AppleCheeks

Knickernappies

All the cloth diaper companies vary slightly in what they recommend for stripping which can make it difficult when your diaper stash is a mixed lot.

My favorite method for getting out detergent build up is to use regular blue Dawn. With this method, wash your diapers first then add 1 Tablespoon (about half with a front loader) to a long wash cycle. You will need to do many rinses until all the bubbles are gone and the water runs clear. This can be a very long process because it's dish detergent and it bubbles up more than laundry detergent, but it's worth it.

If mineral build up is the issue with your diapers, then using RLR Laundry Treatment will help. RLR removes minerals from fabric. It's amazing what it will do for microfiber inserts. To use RLR, do a rinse cycle, then add RLR and a little detergent to a long hot wash, then follow with rinse cycles until bubbles are gone.

Another method is to soak in Rockin' Green Soap. I've soaked my diapers over night in the washing machine with Rockin' Green. Using Rockin' Green fill your washer with hot water and 3 Tbsp* of Rockin’ Green, along with your diapers. Let it soak for approximately 30-60 minutes. Then launder as usual, skipping the soap. If you have a lot of build up you may need to repeat this process a few times. Because Rockin' Green brings all the build up to the surface your diapers may get worse before they get better, but don't give up.

Leaking, stinky diapers are never fun! So if you are in this dilemma don't despair ask your local retailer for help or contact the manufacturer for suggestions.

Gift Giving Made Easy

The holiday bustle is upon us. It’s my favorite time of year. Once October 1st comes, I begin planning out all the upcoming holiday festivities. Christmas is such a magical time of year! I have the calendar booked with local activities for the family. We attend outdoor concerts, movies in the park, parades, cut down a Christmas tree, and so many more activities. Buying gifts used to be one of my favorite things and still is near the top of the list, but with a toddler in tow I find it a little more daunting. I love to find cute, practical gifts and I have a few to share with you today.

First up, a reusable snack and sandwich bag is great for any one on your list. It keeps many plastic baggies out of landfills. They are cute and make a packed lunch and snacking more fun! My favorite feature of these bags is the Velcro closure. My toddler has no problem opening it up himself, sitting it next to his leg in the car seat and then closing it back when he’s finished. There’s no more scream or whining when he’s dropped his snack cup on the floor.

Second up, the Baby Bottoms Baby or Toddler doll is the perfect doll for all young children. These dolls are available in four races: African American, Asian, Caucasian, and Hispanic. They are anatomically correct and also have a belly button. The Toddler dolls come with a little Baby Bjorn style potty. It’s perfect for modeling a practicing potty learning. My favorite feature of this doll is it’s completely made of fabric and can easily be thrown right in the washing machine when it gets dirty.

Third up, wet bags are a useful gift for new moms or even grandmothers. All new mothers regardless of their diapering status can use wet bags. Every one knows how many times a day a baby gets changed. Spit up, drool, accidents all bring about clothing changes. Why not have an adorable wet bag to store stinky, dirty clothes in the diaper bag? My grandmother uses a wet bag every day at the YMCA. After, her wet aerobics class she uses the wet bag to store her swim suit in for her trip home. I use a small size wet bag to keep my camera safe from any sippy cup or other liquid spills in the diaper bag. Wet bags have so many useful purposes!

I’m off to bake some more cookies and hang some more tinsel. If you’d like to win a free Candy Cane snack bag there are many ways to enter and each one will result in a separate entry. Entries must be received by December 15, 2010.

Cloth and Disposable Swim Diapers Go Head to Head, Plus a giveaway! (Giveaway Closed)

Ahh, swim diapers, those diapers we only think about for part of the year, yet they are necessary. Necessary to contain the little accidents we don't want floating around in the pool.

All swim diapers are designed to contain poop, but not pee. If it was absorbent it would just soak up water and weigh the child down. Since the goal of the swim diaper is to contain poop, I began to wonder if the disposable swim diaper contained it better than the cloth swim diaper. I was leary because all my experiences with disposable diapers usually ended in me or my son being covered in poop. Any time my son has ever had a blow out it has been in a disposable diaper. I learned my lesson quickly and now when a disposable diaper is necessary we use the Flip with a disposable insert.

With this thought in mind, I decided to conduct my own little experiment to check them out. I began by placing uncooked oatmeal in each diaper while my son was wearing it in a tub of water for 5 minutes to see what would happen. I created a slide show of what I experienced. Run your arrow across the bottom to see the captions.

The experiment started by adding 2/3 cup of oatmeal to an ImseVimse swim diaper. My son sat in a container of water for five minutes. Pictures were taken of the water after the five minutes. The ImseVimse cloth swim diaper contained the oatmeal. The same amount of oatmeal was then added to the Huggies Swim Diaper. He sat again for five minutes (while eating a lollipop) in a container of water. After five minutes, the soggy oatmeal started escaping around the waist of the diaper. The water was foggy. The conclusion seems obvious. Which swim diaper would you want on a child in a public pool?

A word about cloth swim diapers ~ Cloth swim diapers come in a few varieties. I personally prefer the ones with snaps versus velcro. The velcro can scratch the adult's swimsuit while holding the child if it is not covered up with another swimsuit. When I have used a bumGenius or FuzziBunz one size diaper for a swim diaper it has worked fine. I'm not sure how well it works in comparision to the cloth swim diapers, but it must be better than the disposable variety. It does tend to hold more water than the slim fitting ImseVimse swim diaper.

Another great aspect to the swim diaper, is the savings. The Huggies Little Swimmers Swim Pants I bought was on sale for $6.99 for 10. That's almost $0.70 each! I can't imagine buying these for daily swim lessons. Most cloth swim diapers I have seen or bought have been under $15.00 each. They last all summer and then can be saved and used with another child.

Cloth Wipes, Worth the Investment?

I'm Carissa owner of Wee Willie Winks, where we help you discover what works for your family. Let's talk about those smaller washcloths we like to call "cloth wipes" in the cloth diapering community.

When I began cloth diapering, I didn't start using cloth wipes. My husband thought it would be easier to just use disposable wipes and throw them out as we cleaned up a dirty bottom. As time past, I started thinking about how much money I could save with cloth wipes. I was paying just under $0.02 for each individual disposable wipe. I thought about this with each wipe I threw away. I'm sure we could have gotten them a little cheaper, but I really liked the thickness of particular brand and my little one would often get a rash with other brands.

So eventually I broke down and bought some Thirsties wipes. I was drawn to the softness and fun colors. One 6-pack of Thirsties cloth wipes cost $10.75; that works out to be about $1.80 per wipe. That's a little less than I paid per package of disposable wipes. I was using about 4/5 packages of wipes a month. So my purchase of 3 packs of cloth wipes paid for themselves in a little over 3 months. Definitely a wise money saving addition to our cloth diaper stash.

It took me a while to get a routine down with the cloth wipes so I thought I'd share my routine and tips with you.

I have a little table next to the changing table. On the table is a basket with the wipes, wipe solution, and facial tissues (my glider is on the other side so this is purely for my own convenience). When I get ready to change a diaper I get a couple wipes ready by spraying them down with solution.

When this picture was taken I was trying out Pumkin Baby Foaming Solution, but now I have found my favorite wipe solutions are either homemade or the Thirsties Booty Luster. The Thirsties Booty Luster smells amazing and comes in a great 4 oz. size to throw in the diaper bag or an 8 oz. size for home. It's also non-toxic and has worked extremely well with my son's sensitive skin!

Making your own wipe solution isn't hard, it just takes a little time. After I make up the solution (see recipe below), I store it in a spray bottle I purchased at a local discount store. Another option is to store the wipes in a wipe warmer. To do this you must first roll or fold the cloth wipes and pile into the warmer. Then poor the wipe solution over the wipes until all wipes are moist. When using the wipe warmer you will need to add wipes and solution to it daily.

Here's my favorite wipe solution recipe ~
3 cups water
1/8 cup olive oil
1 tablespoon baby shampoo
4 drops tea tree oil
8 drops lavender oil

So go ahead, take the plunge, invest a little time and money into cloth wipes. They are definitely worth the investment!

Just to help you get started we will have the Thirsties cloth wipes discounted until June 15th.

Wee Willie Winks

Becoming the owner of Wee Willie Winks was serendipitous! It came into my life at the right time and was completely meant to be. I had given birth to my son and decided to stay home, but was looking for something I could do that would allow me to take him with me and meet new people. Just about this time the previous owner of Wee Willie Winks had decided to move on to bigger things and I puchased the business from her. I knew the Central Florida area still needed a local cloth diapering retailer because I wouldn't have used cloth diapers without her help.

Let me introduce myself, I'm Carissa the proud owner of Wee Willie Winks an online cloth diapering boutique. Although, we are an online store, you can often find me around the Orlando, Fl area giving seminars, classes, and demonstrations. I offer monthly cloth diapering information sessions at Infusion Tea in College Park. These classes are always the last Thursday of every month. Weather you live near or far I am always happy to chat cloth diapers and help you discover the love of cloth diapers.

I only carry products I know and have used myself at Wee Willie Winks. Some of these products include: Thirsties, bumGenius, Fuzzibunz, Drybees, Moby Wraps, and Rockin' Green Soap. I hope you will join us as we grow and discover new and exciting cloth diapering products together.
